Among his voters? For many, it's a cult of personality.

Among his staff? Many were put in position because of loyalty, not because of qualification. If they don't continue to show loyalty - blind, unthinking obedient loyalty - to whatever the command of the day is, they're going to lose their exalted position. And they're never going to get another such position, because they're manifestly unqualified for it. So while they have it, they'll do just about anything to keep it, no matter how ridiculous it is.

Can you put some substance behind that statement, or is it just snark?

It's a quote from Marvin in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I am no longer surprised at how disgustingly this stinks.

So? Is your goal to make C++ shine, or is it to produce useful, understandable code? My goal is good code, not being a showoff.

In embedded, I like wrapping a class around a set of registers. Nobody else gets to write to that piece of hardware except that class.

As far as avoiding things... avoid basically everything you don't need. Don't add language features that don't actually help you, just because they're there. Keep the subset you use small. But pick that subset to match your problem well, rather than out of dogma.

We are one world, but within that world are people who are willing to kill you in order to advance their own interests. Given that, I really prefer that the more powerful technology not be in their hands.

Unfortunately, my own country is becoming more that way than I have ever seen it...

Fact is, you won't get your preference. So move on to the next step, and form new, better-informed preferences and opinions.

Assume that you'll be living, and eventually dying, in a world where raw intelligence isn't monopolized by people who agree with you. Then, think about how best to get along in that world and help it flourish benevolently.

Genuine human contact. Giving a real smile.

How to create little moments of genuine human contact. More broadly, human empathy.

The only way to spin it as a success is to decouple the US from international news sources. Otherwise everyone will be aware that Iran is spinning it as an Iranian victory, and enough people will ask "well, who actually won?" and look at the actual results. And in that reckoning, Trump will have lost.

Unless... unless the government of Iran falls during the stalling. If they get no oil revenue... maybe? Could it happen?
